“Project Go Green” offers weekend long activities for kids and adults
WHAT: Earth Day & Arbor Day Activities
Imagine having access to the latest information on recycling, transportation, and environmental education all in one place. “Project Go Green,” a series of free activities throughout the weekend of April 21-22, presented by The Shops at Northfield Stapleton, (www.northfieldstapleton.com) encourages visitors, shoppers and neighbors to help the center celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day 2007.
Programs include a special visit by Santa Claus (yes, he’s taking a break from his holiday in Hawaii), readings, essays, crafts, live animals, hybrid cars, recycling, shredding, box exchange, free shuttles, and displays by a variety of companies showcasing sustainability and environmentally responsible products and services. A list of scheduled activities follows below.
WHEN: Saturday, April 21, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; and Sunday, April 22, 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
WHERE: The Shops at Northfield Stapleton’s Main Street, (between Macy’s and Harkins Theater), just north of I-70 and Quebec Street in Denver.
PARKING: There is plenty of free parking on the east and west sides of Main Street.

SPECIAL APPEARANCE
Santa Claus is making a special appearance from his vacation home in Hawaii. He will be on site from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., April 21. Dressed in his finest luau attire, Santa is making a special stop at The Shops at Northfield Stapleton to help plant 12 trees in the parking lot behind Ling and Louie´s Asian Bar and Grill. Assisting with landscaping is Valley Crest Landscaping. A representative from the Colorado Tree Coalition will be on hand to answer questions about the proper ways to plant trees. This event is in conjunction with The Shops at Northfield Stapleton’s tree promotion last December in which the center gave out tree seedlings during the holiday.
READINGS
Denver City Council President Michael Hancock kicks off “story times” at Borders at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 21. He reads The Lorax, Dr. Seuss’ children’s story which chronicles the plight of the environment.
At 2:00 p.m., that day, Lisa Gardiner, author of What’s Up with Altitude and Catastrophic Colorado presents readings. Other guests and authors also read stories to children throughout the weekend.
Following the 10:00 a.m. reading, The Colorado Tree Coalition answers questions about planting trees.
54 Colorado Posters for The National Arbor Day Poster Contest are displayed at Borders throughout the weekend.
The Shops at Northfield Stapleton donated 1,200 tree seedlings to all 1,200 Poster Day contest participants represented by students from across Colorado.
Save the Earth essays, written by children ages 5-12, are displayed at Guest Services on Main Street.

Environmental Learning for Kids (ELK) 12:00 – 6:00 p.m., April 22.
presents the Skins & Skulls Program and Who Polluted the S. Platte? -- educational programs about urban wildlife and water conservation. Plus, ELK offers practical tips on how to create better habitat and how to save money on water bills.
Starbucks sponsors how to decorate pots and plants. Participants can take seeds home. 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., April 21.
Urban Farm showcases live animals as well as information on summer workshops and sustainable gardening. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., April 21.
Toss coins into the “Green Fountain.” The fountain in front of Harkins Theater on Main Street turns green. Visitors are encouraged to toss in coins. Money collected will be donated to Environmental Learning for Kids and Urban Farm.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal features a video on Arsenal activities and distributes informational materials. 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., April 21.
The Stapleton Area Transportation Management Association (TMA) displays information on April 21. The TMA promotes alternative forms of travel within and around the Stapleton area, as well as improved transportation and transit services.
Free “Sustainability” tours of The Shops at Northfield Stapleton are lead throughout the weekend. The Shops at Northfield Stapleton are committed to environmental responsibility. Northfield was one of the first retail centers in the country to “build green.” Plus, the center was granted a Silver LEED certification from the Green Building Council. The Shops at Northfield Stapleton also created a first-of-its-kind program to encourage tenants to embrace green building and sustainable design. These practices are expected to reduce the amount of energy and natural resources required to operate and maintain, while helping to create a healthier environment for employees and customers.
Free Earth Day crafts and fun items for all families who attend. Crafts will be located in front of Harkins Theater from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. both days.
Harvard Community Homes and Namaste will display how solar photovoltaic cells work from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 pm., April 21. Harvard Community Homes builds homes in the Denver area which are approximately 40 percent more energy efficient that a new home built to current code. Harvard works with the U.S. Department of Energy and its Building America Program on research and designs for the next generation of energy efficient homes. The company’s Near-Zero Energy Home in Stapleton uses approximately 70 % less energy than a new home built to current code, and features on-site electrical generation through the use of photovoltaic solar collectors.

Computer Reuse and Recycling
During last year’s RecycleIt@Stapleton event, The Rotary Club of Denver collected over $15,000 worth of used computer equipment which was donated to benefit schools and orphanages in Nepal, Mongolia and Bangladesh. This year, The Club is partnering with Techno+Rescue to donate usable equipment to educational programs in Colorado, and to ensure that the unusable equipment gets properly recycled and stays out of landfills. Techno+Rescue is an EPA-registered Large Quantity Handler of Universal Waste in the State of Colorado The company specializes in computer and electronic recycling services and is fully compliant with federal, state, and municipal regulations for the proper disposal of electronic waste and scrap. www.technorescue.com.
