Northfield Stapleton’s “Project Go Green” Nets 3.5 Tons of Recycled Materials during Earth Day Activities

10-year old Sonia Gomez Denver, wins essay Contest on

“Why it’s important to save the Earth?”

DENVER, April 30, 2007 --    More than 3.5 tons of recycled materials from paper, bicycles, and electronics were collected during the Earth Day weekend at The Shops at Northfield Stapleton.

Diane Fiore, marketing director for The Shops at Northfield Stapleton, said, “We were amazed at the turnout and results from citizens who took advantage of the opportunities to recycle their items.”

Fiore added that more than one ton of paper was collected through Shred-It Denver, a document destruction company; 5,020 pounds of electronics were dropped off to Techno+Rescue, an EPA registered handler of waste; as well as other used computers that were dropped off at Northfield’s guest services.

“We collected everything from old radios to 20 pounds of batteries, to 32 cell phones, 55 desktop computers, 14 printers and a total of more than 400 items,” she said.

The weekend’s free activities included various drop off areas for visitors to shred papers, recycle products, have their bikes tuned, and take in free educational programs on photo voltaic cells, hybrid cars, tree planting, sustainability tours of the shopping center, and arts and crafts projects for children.

Fiore said the center also held an essay contest for children on the subject of “Why it’s important to save the Earth?”  Children ages five through 12 submitted 844 essays and 10-year-old Sonia Gomez of Denver was declared the winner. She is a fifth grade student at Williams Roberts School in Denver.  Her winning essay follows:

“This is where we live, where go to school and work, and if we ruin it, life wouldn’t be so perfect.  Just like us, the earth is a living thing: it breathes, it gets sick, and just like us, it could die.  Our lives revolve around the earth, and saving it would be saving ourselves along with it. People know that the earth needs to be saved, but the idea is trapped in their minds like a river behind a dam, and unfortunately they don’t pull that bit of information out very often. So, let’s open their minds and let the rivers flow.”

Sonia’s wining essay netted her a $25 gift card to The Shops at Northfield Stapleton, four Harkins movie tickets and a certificate.
